laying sod

awe...spring is here and the day has arrived.  what a perfect day to put some of the last pieces of sod in our backyard (pics will be coming).  it only took us about 7 months to come up with the "extra" cash to put some sod in (gee wiz...).  we seriously would buy about $15 to $20 worth a time and put a few strips in.  BUT, it is finally in and how incredibly appropriate it be on the first day of spring.  so cal weather calls for sunny and beautiful warm temps for the next few days...the garden is the afternoon project.  we will be planting carrots, cucumbers (or pickles, as addison calls them), spinach, broccoli (did i spell that correctly, i always forget if it is two c's or two l's-guess i should know this as a teacher), bell peppers, onions, blueberries, boysenberries, and the tomatoes are already "cookin'" in the garden from last fall, believe it or not.  i hope they all do well and produce lots of yummy food for the summer.  we will be splitting this between two different gardening areas.  mark and i have decided to build planter boxes in the side garden.  i have heard this can be better for gardens, not quite sure though.  it will look better, that's for sure, because we are going to have dark brown bark surrounding the boxes for a walkway.  anyway, we are quite thrilled to begin these annual efforts.  oh, the girls had a blast "helping" with the sod...oh, heavens, they were soaked from the hose and loving' every minute of it.  so fun to see them playing in the water on our green grass.  off to do more crafts and finish the garden.  happy spring, everyone!
